When I first walked through the gates of TASCE (now SACOETEC) in 2002 as a Medical Officer, I could scarcely imagine the journey that lay ahead. What began as a commitment to serve a government institution evolved into a 23-year odyssey of sacrifice, leadership, and profound lessons. As I bid farewell to this remarkable institution, I reflect on a tenure marked by triumphs, trials, and an unwavering dedication to its people. From Medical Officer to Trailblazer My early days were defined by a clear mission: to safeguard the health of students and staff at the medical centre. By 2008, when the College relocated to its current site, I stepped into the role of pioneer Head of Medical Services as a Senior Medical Officer. This promotion thrusts me into the heart of institutional decision-making—management meetings, statutory committees, and all. It was a privilege that deepened my understanding of SACOETEC’s inner workings. A pivotal moment arrived during a staff uprising. That crisis illuminated a stark reality: management and staff often see the world through vastly different lenses. While leadership charts the course for long-term stability, staff rightfully prioritize their livelihoods. Bridging this divide remains one of TASCE/SACOETEC’s enduring challenges—a lesson I carried throughout my tenure. Milestones Amidst Adversity Over the years, I spearheaded initiatives that I believe will echo beyond my departure: Zero Mortality Record: My team and I maintained an impeccable health record, with no lives lost on campus during my time as Head of Medical Services. I developed a health services system that runs on minimal support, yet achieved significant impact Digital Transformation: I trained academic staff to adapt lesson notes for online delivery and master Learning Management Systems—a step toward modernizing education. Online Professional Diploma in Education (PDE): I conceptualized and launched this program, opening doors for educators nationwide. TRCN Partnership: I fostered a collaboration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, securing biannual certification and induction ceremonies at SACOETEC. These achievements came at a huge personal cost. As the sole medical doctor in a growing institution, I operated on a fractured salary with no support staff. I doubled as my own secretary, clerk, and medical officer, even as Medical Director. The lack of resources was a constant hurdle, yet duty compelled me to press on. My hope is that no future medical staff endures such strain—my exit should mark the end of this chapter of neglect. The Weight of Institutional Challenges Leading the medical department in a resource-starved environment was no small feat. Economic hardship and systemic oversight plagued our community, leaving staff and students vulnerable. In 2014/2015, when salaries abruptly ceased, I joined the Elders Forum to mediate between staff and Ogun State stakeholders, averting the College’s collapse. That we survived speaks to our collective grit—though unpaid salary arrears linger as a bitter reminder of promises unkept. Wisdom for Tomorrow’s Leaders To those who will steer SACOETEC forward, I offer this: prioritize staff welfare. People are the heartbeat of any institution, and SACOETEC’s strength lies in its human capital. To my colleagues, I say: invest in yourselves. The world of higher education is evolving—seize every chance to grow and prepare for life beyond these walls. Treasured Moments Among my proudest memories is receiving the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship Award from the University of Roehampton, UK, alongside five fellow Nigerians. It was a testament to the power of perseverance and global engagement. Faith and integrity have been my compass, guiding me through moments of trust and, at times, betrayal. As I leave, I carry a mosaic of emotions—gratitude chief among them. A Vision for SACOETEC’s Future I dream of a SACOETEC where professionals thrive, academics find purpose, and management pursues global relevance. A place where institutional expertise fuels progress and exceptional effort is rewarded. This vision is within reach—if leadership dares to act. Unfinished Business Yet, challenges remain: Medical Staff Turnover: The alarming loss of healthcare professionals must be curbed with deliberate recruitment and retention strategies. Online Education: The shift of General Education Courses online, once begun, was abandoned—revive it for efficiency. Salary Struggles: The current pay structure repels talent, threatening SACOETEC’s mission as a teacher-training hub. Legacy Debts: Decades of unpaid salary arrears, pensions, and benefits haunt retirees and former staff. This is not just a financial failing—it’s a moral one. The Governing Council and Management must honor these obligations. SACOETEC stands today because of its people’s sacrifices. To ignore their dues is to tarnish its legacy. Staff (old or new, in or out of service) must be elevated from working like a pensionless storekeeper, to a full and proud public servant. That failing needs to be corrected from the source and its integrity maintained for the future. A Heartfelt Farewell To my colleagues—teaching and non-teaching alike—thank you for the camaraderie, the struggles, and the shared victories. To the leadership, keep staff welfare central. To future educators, be bold and relentless. After 23 years, SACOETEC has been my home, my proving ground, and my inspiration. As I step into the next chapter, I leave with appreciation and a fervent hope: may this institution rise to the global stature it deserves.
